The Relationship between Gender Role Conflict and Psychological Distress in Middle-Aged Men : The Mediating Effect of Ambivalence on Emotional Expressiveness

The present study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of ambivalence on emotional expressiveness in the relation between gender role conflict and psychological distress. 319 middle-aged men were recruited for this study. Questionnaires were utilized to measure their perceptions of gender role conflict, psychological distress, and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. Responses were analyzed via correlational analyses and structural equation modeling and were as follows: First, gender role conflict, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and psychological distress showed a positive correlation. Second, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness fully mediated the relationship between gender role conflict and psychological distress. Finally, implications, limitations and the suggestions for future study are discussed.
